Five Friday Favorites

This is the third edition of my Five Friday Favorites. You can read about this series and see the first edition here and the second edition here!

  1. Favorite personal finance article/post. As always, it is nearly impossible to choose just one favorite personal finance article for the week, because there is just so much good information out there. This week, I particularly enjoyed Johnny from Our Freaking Budget’s discussion of going plastic with the envelope system. I have never personally tried the envelope system, but for someone just starting out with a budget it seems like a great idea. That said, cash is tedious and, with the ubiquity of online shopping, sometimes not even useable. The idea of using a pre-paid card is very intriguing, and I look forward to seeing how it works for Johnny!
  1. Favorite non-personal finance article/post. I love watching Mike and Lauren’s videos each week, and this week was no exception. Although they do often focus on personal finance, I really enjoyed this video in which Mike talks about how they got from zero to 10,000 subscribers on their YouTube channel. While I don’t have a YouTube channel, it was interesting to hear how they grew their subscriber count and I think a lot of the tips they discuss can work for basic blogging as well.
  1. Favorite thing I did this week. Well, in the past seven days I’ve been in Lisbon, Budapest and Vienna, soooo this is not an easy question. I’m going to pretend that only Lisbon counts this week and deal with Budapest and Vienna next week. My favorite thing I did this week in Lisbon was taking Tram 28 up to Alfama. I know, I know, it is so touristy. But it was really fun, a nice break from walking in the HOT weather, and a great way to see the beautiful streets of Lisbon.

  1. Favorite recipe. Nothing really says summer like a picnic in the park, or on the beach, or heck even on the back deck. I’m not such a big fan of the classic picnic recipe – chicken salad sandwich – but this chickpea salad sandwich from Erin at Reading My Tea Leaves looks delicious. Maybe I’ll give it a try and find another beautiful Paris park to test it out in!
  1. Favorite quote. I think I’ve hid it relatively well so far, but the reality is that most of the quotes I collect are, well, depressing. In any case, I think they are beautiful and capture life accurately. And, in the interest of sharing my genuine interests on this blog, today I’ll share one of my favorites – it is cynical (or pragmatic!) with a touch of snark. And oh, so true.
